This year’s premier Dota 2 championship is introducing a fresh twist to its format, aiming to elevate the competition and enhance the viewing experience. The organizers have restructured the event to ensure that every match carries significant stakes while maintaining the exciting dynamics that fans have come to expect.
The International 2025 will include a stage modeled on the Swiss system during its first three days. This change sets the tournament apart from previous editions, marking a notable departure from traditional formats.
During the initial phase, 16 teams will play best-of-three matches, competing against others with equivalent records. Any team that secures four wins will advance to the main event. After five rounds of play, three teams will have already qualified, while three teams will be eliminated. The remaining 10 teams will enter a dedicated elimination round to determine five additional qualifiers and five teams that will exit the competition.
Key points behind the format adjustment include:
- Every match is designed to have clear and meaningful consequences for both teams and viewers.
- The intent is to preserve the essential, meta-defining group stage games that have become a fan favorite.
- The revised structure addresses previous issues where some round robin matches lacked impact on the overall tournament outcomes.
The Road to The International will commence on September 4, with the main event scheduled to begin the following week on September 11. All events will take place at the Barclays Arena in Germany, promising an exciting showdown for competitors and fans alike.
