From Passion Project to AAA Rival: The Journey of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Excitement is building for a prominent JRPG set to launch in 2025 that had a humble beginning as a passion project, with initial contributions made voluntarily. The captivating JRPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is scheduled to debut next year with a full release showcasing graphics that rival many AAA titles, despite its indie origins. Creative director Guillaume Broche shared insights in a recent interview, noting that writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen joined the team as a voice actress but soon transitioned into co-writing and ultimately took on the role of lead writer.
This project started organically, initially revolving around enjoyment, with everyone involved contributing their time without pay. As development progressed, the project evolved into a commercial endeavor, prompting Broche to leave Ubisoft and establish the studio Sandfall Interactive specifically for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Nevertheless, the development process remained challenging and resourceful during the early stages. Artist Nicholas Maxis-Francombe recounted starting their journey in Belgium during the pandemic and later relocating to Montpelier, where he and Broche spent about a month in an Airbnb.
As their stay came to an end, they realized the urgency of securing permanent housing. Fortunately, after establishing their base, the team successfully raised the necessary funds to create a playable demo, which helped them secure Kepler Interactive as a publisher, providing crucial financial support to complete the game. Since being unveiled, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has captured the attention of many, particularly due to its striking graphics enlivening a turn-based RPG.
This combination suggests that modern games can successfully retain traditional gameplay styles, as exemplified by the Persona series. Additionally, the game boasts an impressive cast, featuring talents like Charlie Cox and Andy Serkis. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set to release next spring, and the creative director has integrated parrying into the combat system after being inspired by gameplay dynamics in Sekiro, prompting the thought that such mechanics could enhance the game's experience.
